  • Cartoons and Crickets

So my recent obsession is trying to draw charicatures of people; only most of my drawings end up looking more realistic than exaggerated.  But at least I'm learning to draw faces better.  So far I have drawn myself, Kat, and a couple of old photographs of high school friends; but the thesis has reclaimed my attentions for the present and halted my progress.

The large pain in my life at the moment, besides the ever present thesis, is the fact that the pool has been inundated by a plague of crickets.  As the lifeguard it is my responsibility to skim the top of the water of any foreign objects, but crickets are just too much.  There was a corner today that had almost a full two square feet of floating cricket bodies; I couldn't even go near it without wanting to vomit.  Luckily, no one showed up at the pool for almost two hours which gave me enough time to settle my stomach and calm my nerves enough to dispose of the disgusting mass.  I still haven't figured out if it is the birds or the ants that somehow manage to make entire piles of the insects disappear in under an hour from where I dumped them, but I am grateful whatever the culprit.

  • As promised I will post a Costa Rica story; a short one for starters.

We took three different teams to Costa Rica: vision screening, vacation bible school, and construction.  Vision screening saw about 296 people in 4 days, vacation bible school had around 125 kids in two locations over those same days, and construction re-roofed a medical clinic and poured a sidewalk for a local church.  Overall a very rewarding couple of days.

One of my favorite stories is from the first day we worked in the area.  We all were at a little school in El Recreo and I was preparing for the VBS music when one of the vision screening people brought an older gentleman out wearing a new pair of glasses.  They pointed into the distance, and as the man saw the leaves on the trees for the first time in years his weathered face broke into a huge, tear-jerking smile.  That one moment made the entire trip worth it for me, and there were so many more like it.  God definately blessed our efforts and I will continue to pray that the fire we started in the area will spread and grow.

  • Hola!  Estoy en Costa Rica!  We all got here safely and we are having fun doing the Lord´s work.  Thank you for all of your prayers and keep them coming since we still have 4 days here.  It has been amazing and I will have to tell some stories when I´m not paying by the minute for the internet.  See you soon en los Estados Unidos.

  • So passports are scary things to try and get by a certain date.  I've got only about 36 hours before I'm supposed to be on a plane for Costa Rica and still no nice little booklet that lets me out of the country.  I get to call the congressman again first thing tomorrow to see if I can drive and go pick it up somewhere.  Please pray that it comes to Abilene tomorrow.

Oh, and keep my brother William and sister Kristin in your prayers as well.  It seems they both have extreme allergies to some kind of bug bite and they are both working outdoors in camps all summer.  My sister got to visit the emergency room a couple of years ago and my brother just went today.
